Apple’s new Operating System Updates & Features in iOS 11 at WWDC 2017

Apple has been the leader of the Smartphone and Tablet since the first iPhone launched and they continue to make iOS updates that will enhance the use of these devices while trying to keep a competitive advantage over Android.

On June 5th at the Worldwide Developers Conference  2017, Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO announced the updates for iOS 11, he said this version takes the best and most advanced operating system and take Apple’s operating system to the next level, bringing in new subtle designs and new looks to some of the standard apps are a part of the updates.

Apple is a technology giant for good reason, they have created and maintained an operating system that has taken the world by storm, iPhone users are quick to denigrate other phones as they see Apple products in general as superior to anything currently on the market. This may or may not be true depending on your personal preference, but one thing is for sure Apple has a huge following and a market share to support the hype.

Apple’s latest updates and features at WWDC 2016 for iPhone and iWatch

This time, Apple focuses on only software, no new hardware has been released. At WWDC 2016 Apple announced latest updates and features primarily on iOS, MacOS, tvOS and watch OS.

iOS 10: iOS 10 features started with a redesigning Lock screen, includes 3D-touch, notifications that enable access to more information, easily accessible camera, and new widgets. Control Center also has been redesigned with the support of 3D Touch and a wake-up feature that wakes up the screen without bypassing notifications. iphone Siri can do a lot more in iOS 10. An updated Siri allows developers to build Siri support into their apps so that we can now ask Siri to do more things with third party apps like a Uber to book a ride or WhatsApp to send a message.

Messages have been updated with new features like background animations, bubble effects, sketching feature, which also was introduced on the Apple Watch, this feature allows users to create drawings. A predictive emoji feature that can suggest words in the message to replace emoji’s, by tapping on selected emoji, that word will replace the emoji automatically. Message app has its own Message App Store in this update, so iOS developers can create iMessage apps that can be used and improve Message app with unlimited capabilities. Message app can now send stickers and GIFs to order dinner and make payments.

And Apple added a dedicated Home app to operate multiple HomeKit devices, Photos app improved the recognition feature. Map and Music apps also have redesigned.

Watch OS 3: watchOS 3 is a significant update, introducing new apps, new watch faces, and impressive performance improvements. According to Apple, it is going to feel like a whole new watch. Navigation has been improved, with left and right swipes now used to change the iwatch face.

Activity sharing is new in watchOS 3, allowing Apple Watch owners to share their workout and activity information with friends to compete with each other  stay motivated. New activity-based Smart Replies in the app are available to communicate with friends and family over activity achievements. There are settings in the Activity app to customize workouts and activities for wheelchair users, with wheelchair pushes contributing to all-day calorie goals.

A new Breathe app is designed to guide Apple Watch owners through daily deep breathing sessions to cut down on stress and induce relaxation, and there are also new Reminders and Find My Friends Apps. There are three new watch faces, including Minnie Mouse, simple numerals face, and an Activity face that shows activity rings plus more faces can work with complications.

An SOS feature will automatically call emergency services when the side button pressed, no matter where you are in the world, and the Apple Watch can now be used to unlock a password protected Mac’s with new Continuity functionality.

The Messages app redesign makes it quicker to reply to incoming texts, and a new “Scribble” feature allowing you to write on the Apple Watch face with a finger.

Building on Siri – The Future of Mobile Software Development

Siri, the voice in the latest iPhone, is a great start for Apple. It’s been successful, probably beyond their expectations. This has made them even more protective in their drive to prevent “jail breaks” – that’s what the development world calls efforts to open up, or gain access to, the operating system so they can run software and do other things not authorized by Apple. With so much at stake, and with those efforts to break through the defenses so relentless, Apple is vigorously defending its technology, using every tool and technique available.  For example, Apple filed a suit recently against Samsung for infringing on four patents, including Siri’s “voice search.” Sooner or later though, Apple will have to yield and open up a bit. When they do, developers will rush to add Siri’s voice recognition features to their applications.

That voice recognition capability is part of a field called natural language processing or NLP, and its potential goes far beyond the usefulness we’ve seen to date. The way it works is straightforward in principle, if not so much in programming. What happens when you say something like “Please call my Mom,” or “Call Mom,” or something similar? The software recognizes the words “call” and “Mom” and links them. Same thing if you say, “Dial Mom.” The software recognizes nouns and verbs and their synonyms and responds by taking a specific action.

There are many ways this idea can be expanded upon. Right now you have to press a button to activate the software, but you could have a sound activated system that monitors a room and takes a specific action whenever a certain word or sound is heard. It could be in a secure area; it could be in a nursery; or it could be in a conference room. The system could be flexible enough to adapt itself to a complicated spoken command such as “Listen for the phrase xyz, then calculate the latest values for factors 1, 2, and 3. Display the results on the conference room monitor.” The possibilities are endless. Think Star Trek and the voice controlled systems on the Enterprise. They’re always on, always listening, and always responding.

You can extend the notion even further. Cell phones were getting smaller until touch displays and video cameras came along. Then they had to get bigger in order to have a useable display. But, suppose you didn’t have to scroll through apps to find the one you wanted? You could just tell your phone what you wanted or where you wanted to go, and it would sort through the hundreds of apps, find the one corresponding to your needs, activate it, and report/display the results to you. It could also keep track of your location and surroundings and give you a running commentary and make informed suggestions based on your transaction history and interests. Face it, sooner or later your phone will shrink to pen size or smaller, maybe even become part of your body as an implanted micro device.

Or, you might combine NLP with very flexible LCD displays descended from the flexible displays that tech companies like Nokia and Samsung are working on. Then you’d have a screen you could unroll when you need a face to face with someone or want to view content the way you might view it on a TV, magazine, or newspaper. It’d be something like the old-fashioned book scroll you see in period pieces, or even more compact when it’s time to put it away. That’d fit right in with the pen analogy.

Windows Mobile 7 May Become a Key Player in the Mobile Market

The Windows Mobile device hasn’t been able to get much of a foothold in a mobile market dominated by the iPhone and Android. Even Blackberry has held on to its niche better than many expected (probably because of its security that is favored by corporate and government users). However, Microsoft has an enormous installed base of users that are accustomed to the look and feel of the Windows environment. While we haven’t seen a surge in interest in application development with Windows Mobile 7 yet, as a mobile application development firm, Vensi believes Windows Mobile 7 may very well take off very soon, so we are spending some quality time with the technology and exploring its capabilities.

Nokia obviously also sees the potential, since they announced plans to drop their proprietary O/S platform and partner with Microsoft to power the new Nokia smartphones with Windows Mobile 7 software. This partnership is a surprise to many of us who have watched Nokia and Microsoft wage epic battles for a decade in what The Economist so eloquently called “The Fight for Digital Dominance”. In the mobile world, it seems even staunch enemies can become friends in an effort to survive and ultimately thrive. As mobile application development experts, Vensi thinks that if these two one-time opponents can truly extend the olive branch and appreciate and leverage one another’s strengths, they could solve the IOS/Android conundrum and create unprecedented opportunities in the mobile industry.

In addition to the promise of tremendous synergy with the PC (and a huge enterprise market), there is another key advantage we see with Windows Mobile 7: an environment rich with possibility for truly ingenious mobile applications. Microsoft has nurtured strong relationships with programmers and developers over the years, and that has created tremendous loyalty in their programming ecosystem. Further, from the point of view of developers, the platform is quite similar to .NET, and there is an abundance of .NET developers out there who can easily start programming apps for Windows Mobile 7 immediately. A rapid pace for new apps and Microsoft’s pervasive marketing machine could give Google and its Android a run for their money. As for the iPhone, we know Microsoft has successfully taken on Apple in the past, and even Apple is not invincible, especially without Steve Jobs at the helm…

Some suggest that Windows Mobile 7 could surpass the Blackberry and challenge the Android and iPhone in sales and adoption by mainstream users. At Vensi, while we don’t believe this will happen overnight, we believe it could go even further and expand the mobile development market as a whole by bringing in many new end users and there’s always the possibility that Microsoft can even reinvent the playing field.
